Hotel de Nesle
7 rue de Nesle, 6th, from €75 for two
It’s fabulously kitsch in this hotel, owned by a former hippy whose son has painted murals in the 20 rooms. Now, the hotel is more hip than hippy. The Molière room has a chaise longue, candelabra and a bed behind a velvet curtain. One room has its own steam room, but not all have private bathrooms. If you want something a bit different and full of character, this is the place.

Mama Shelter
109 rue de Banolet, 20th, doubles from €89
Hear the phrase “designed by Philippe Starck” and it sounds expensive. But Mama Shelter, which opened with 172 rooms last year, proves you can have chic and cheap. In the east of Paris by the Père Lachaise cemetery, it is a bit of a design statement, with concrete walls, bedside lights made from torches and masks, and quotations scrawled on the dining room ceiling. But rooms, with kitchenettes, are sleek and modern.

EDINBURGH
Inveresk House
Inveresk Village, Musselburgh, double room £100
Oliver Cromwell stayed here, just 15 minutes from the centre, when planning his siege of Edinburgh Castle. Set in three acres of grounds, this B&B is magnificent, with enormous, antique-filled rooms. Storytelling Apartment
9 Royal Mile, £100 for two to four
For self-catering in a central position it doesn’t get much better than this one-bedroom apartment that’s bang on the Royal Mile. Dunstane City Hotel
5 Hampton Terrace, Haymarket, £99 for two
The Dunstane City Hotel is a smart boutique property with just 18 rooms. It is just five minutes’ walk from Haymarket train station and 20 minutes from the castle.

AMSTERDAM
Pilrig House Apartments
30 Pilrig House Close, £33-£42pp
History oozes from the pores of this A-listed 17th-century Scottish townhouse. Home to Robert Louis Stevenson’s mother’s family, it was often visited by the author when he was a child; he mentions Pilrig house in Kidnapped and Catriona. Stay in one of three self-catering apartments — our favourite is Park, sleeping four, with its Palladian staircase entrance, seating area overlooking parkland and a mixture of antiques and modern furniture. It’s only a 15-minute walk from the city centre.
Details: 0131-554 4794, www.pilrighouse.com

citizenM
Prinses Irenestraat, from €69 for two
The citizenM hotel opened to rave reviews at Schiphol airport last year and a sister property with 215 rooms has been opened on Prinses Irenestraat in the city. Everyone gets large wall-to-wall windows, power showers plus free on-demand movies and wi-fi. Downstairs there’s a lobby that the owners say has deliberately been designed not to look like a lobby.

Other recommendation for the  Paris, Dublin, Brussels, Edinburgh, Amsterdam

Paris -
La Villa Paris, our luxury design Bed and Breakfast in Paris is a typical charming red brick 1920' s mansion, situated between the Butte aux Cailles and parc Montsouris quarter.
The Marais Guesthouse is not a hotel, more of a cross between a hotel particulier and a prestige bed & breakfast. But it qualifies amply our 4 lys category. Yann-Gabriel Hentschke’s meticulously restored interior breaks the mold—and positively exudes attitude. He lovingly tracked down the raw materials to transform a derelict shell into a chateau-in-miniature.
Dublin
Morehampton Townhouse Hotel  Dublin 4   You can enjoy easy access to Dublin City's major tourist attractions when you stay at Morehampton Townhouse, a quality 3 star Guesthouse located in Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
When you stay at the Guesthouse Dublin City Centre (3 Star) you can enjoy one of the best locations in Dublin City Centre. You will be just a stones throw from St. Stephen's Green & Trinity and located between Merrion Square & Fitzwilliam Square. You can enjoy the surroundings of this spacious Georgian Building which dates back to the mid-1700's. Bed and Breakfast Dublin City Centre
Brussels -
Barangay is a Filipino word meaning small village or community. Our tropical decorated guesthouse is located in a typical Amsterdam canal house built in 1777 on the former coastline of Amsterdam. The house has still her original facade with a gable stone of an island with 3 palm trees.
Located in the northern, tranquil & safest part of Amsterdam, only a few bus minutes from the very centre of the city, in the most picturesque little street of Amsterdam, you will find Arrantea Guest House B&B.
